It was after mid-night,

We had a prowler in our back yard.  He had a flashlight, and was searching for something.  I do not think he found it, but he looked for over a half hour.  We called the cops.  Of course, the cop found him, but did not realize he was the intruder.  The guy left anyway.  e need to put up security fences up, and more lighting.
