Radio; My love affair.......

Before there was television, there was radio. Tom Lewis wrote the book on Radio. His title was;"Empire of the Air; The Men Who Made Radio" That is exactly what radio is. It transcends most boundaries. It is almost immutable. In the story of "Border Radio" there are countless stories of how Mexican stations sent their signals throughout the U.S. . Just recently, WLS was bombarded by a Mexican station which wiped it's signal off the map. Even though WLS was to have been a Clear Channel, that is, no station was to infere with its signal, that had no bearing from Mexico, who is allowed to have higher powered stations. Wolf Man Jack in the early '60's took over a Mexican station, and made a ton of money in running it. He described the first time he saw the statioon. It had belonged to a quack who was known as the "Goat gland Dr.. How many men did he kill, no one knows, but eventually, the long arm of the law caught up with this fake doctor. My memory of his name is not what it should be, but trust me on this. Wolfman said that it was dark, but the powerful transmission of the radio transmitter caused the lights of the cars parked in the parking lot to blink on and off. That is strong RF, Radio Frequency. It is no wonder that those in the station had headaches. I am a Ham operator, and we are told to try to restrict RF. It can kill. Well, hell, what do you think a radar range heats food ? Dr. Brinkley, that was the Goat gland Dr's name. He broadcast from Del Raye , Texas, a border town near Mexico.
So, radio has had its dark side, and those who work in it , are just this side of being honest, but it is fun.
I'll write more later.....
